As the sun’s golden rays painted the sky over Ljubljana, Sarah and Mark, a couple of adventurous souls with a penchant for off-the-beaten-path travel, embarked on a journey through this captivating land. Their trusty camper van became their mobile home as they set out to unravel the mysteries and marvels of Slovenia.
Their first stop was the Partizan’s War Hospital Franja, a place that whispered tales of bravery in the face of adversity. Hidden in a gorge with a rushing river below, this improvised hospital was a sanctuary during World War II. Wooden huts, perched on stilts above the water, had once served as wards, operating rooms, and kitchens. To reach this secluded spot, one had to traverse a treacherous path, but today, a set of stairs made the journey more accessible while preserving the awe-inspiring beauty of the site.
As they continued their journey, the road led them to Skocjan, a town in the southwestern corner of Slovenia. Only accessible by car, Skocjan offered an extraordinary adventure. Following the signs on the A1 highway, the paved road soon gave way to gravel, and they parked their camper at one of the small lots within the park. Equipped with sturdy hiking boots, they embarked on a challenging hike down to a remarkable gorge. The path, often steep and flanked by dense vegetation, required careful navigation. But the reward was worth every step. They found themselves beneath a towering bridge, peering into an underground realm of awe-inspiring caves and an underground river.
What enchanted them the most about this natural wonder was its diversity. Skocjan offered hiking trails of varying lengths and levels of difficulty, catering to all types of adventurers. As they walked the winding paths and explored the captivating caves, Sarah and Mark felt like they had the entire landscape to themselves, enveloped by serene solitude.
Each day brought a new discovery and a deeper appreciation for Slovenia’s allure. From the serene Bled Lake, where an island church beckoned from afar, to the rugged beauty of Triglav National Park, home to Slovenia’s highest peak, they witnessed the ever-changing landscapes that make Slovenia a paradise for nature lovers.
But it wasn’t just the breathtaking scenery that captured their hearts. It was the blend of history, nature, and adventure that made Slovenia an unforgettable destination. As the couple continued their journey, they couldn’t help but feel that they were traversing through time, connecting with the echoes of the past, and embracing the beauty of the present.
Slovenia, the pearl of Central Europe, had cast its spell on Sarah and Mark, leaving them with memories to cherish and a longing to return, for there was always more to explore in this land of hidden wonders.
Taking a break in the shades of century-old oakit trees, enjoying the view of the splendid Big Natural Bridge (Veliki naravni most), travelling back in time at the ruins of the church of St. Cantianus, breathing in the fresh cave air under the slender arch of the Little Natural Bridge (Mali naravni most), or strolling along the soft and maintained trail by the tall-grown firs is an unforgettable experience over and over again…
The Rakov Škocjan valley is a karst valley at the northern base of the Javorniki hills which was created when the ceiling of a karst cave began sinking and collapsing. This is proven by the 42-meter Little Natural Bridge, the 37-meter Big Natural Bridge and two gorges behind them.
At the flat clayey bottom meanders the Rak stream, surrounded by cleared woodlands and flood meadows. The Rak is fed by underground waters discharging from the Cerknica plain and from beneath the Javorniki hills. This small river surfaces from the Zelške jame caves in the eastern part of the valley and disappears in the Tkalca jama cave in the west.
Together with Lake Cerknica and the Križna jama cave, the Rakov Škocjan valley has been designated as a wetland of international importance – Ramsar Site. The valley was also the first Slovenian regional park, established as early as 1949. As it is appropriate for such a natural sight, the valley also features an education trail.
